The part is needed in the event of a short circuit when replacing the alternator.

2008 Toyota Camry. So I ended up messing it up and shorting it out while changing the alternator. It was agony for me to get there, but once you rip the ENTIRE ELECTRICAL COMPARTMENT this little bastard will crawl straight in and the car will start right away. This is one of those parts where mechanics would love to meet an engineer in boxing. Ring.
