UPDATE - a month after purchase, the base stopped charging the device, so we connected it manually. The company provided us with a complete bypass for the last month to replace the base. Everything I said below is correct and the simple design is great, but it's not built to last and the manufacturer won't get it right. From 5 to 2 stars. Now iLife employees let us pay for shipping to replace a broken device. It was a long time before they even agreed to a replacement. Had to do all the troubleshooting for them, send in videos and threatened to file a complaint with Revine. UPDATE - after we sent the bot back for a replacement at our expense, it was cleaned, they said the bot went back to base, it's great, but what about the issue of the base not loading the bot? ILife's solution is to maintain the bot after EVERY use - change or clean the filter, remove the brushes and change or clean them, and clean all the cables. Will it make my life easier? They send back the same buggy bot. Don't waste your time and money. ======================= I am writing this review from the perspective of someone who has had a Roomba for the past few years. In short, the Roomba team needs to put less effort into getting their device to make pleasant noises and instead work on its functionality. I can count on one hand the number of times our Roomba has done a great job cleaning the entire house. Its search grid is terrible, it regularly "gets lost" in rooms and runs in the same pattern over and over again until the battery dies. The worst of his sins is the fact that the vacuum is terrible. You look at the tiny, hard-to-clean brushes compared to the size of the device and you see they're less than half the way. I've seen him go through a pile of dirt and pick up maybe 5% of it, which is a liability until you think the real liability is that he smeared the other 95% all over the room. I won't lie, I had VERY low expectations for iLife. So when I saw him keep running and running and running and then disappearing, I was shocked. You watch it find its way, and it's not just random zigzags and zigzags, there's logic behind it. Last, and most importantly, this is an AWESOME vacuum cleaner. I'm not a mechanical engineer, but I know that simplicity is usually best, and it's very easy to set up. There are two counter-rotating brushes with long filaments as wide as the block itself, and both aim at a large portal that sucks objects inside. This thing picked up everything from small rocks and sticks (all sorts of things that Roomba would not only miss but might physically get stuck on) to dust and dirt, which is probably what you consider this device for. It also picks up all the dust and dirt that the Roomba would drive over. The swipe feature is nice too, but could potentially empty its contents if it gets stuck somewhere, so you might want to keep an eye on it. Overall, iLife is what I've come to expect from Roomba and at half the price. I gave up on the auto vacuum meme, and now I'm glad my wife talked me into giving it another try.
