Review on Retroflag CASE Raspberry Zero Shutdown: Optimal Protection and Convenient Shutdown Feature by Harry Love

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Constant crashes/freezes/screen glitches.

***Update 08/20/19*** After much searching and troubleshooting I had to switch to another computer to burn SD cards for zero pi in a GPi case. My main desktop must have misspelled maps, which is what caused most of the freezing issues. It still happens occasionally, but I don't think it's the GPi case itself at the moment. Although the case seems sensitive to a very good connection between the Pi Zero and the case. There are several possible points of failure that should ideally be connected (between GPIO headers, cartridge edge card, chassis). Sometimes the device won't start, so you have to re-establish the connections. I'm increasing my rating to 4 stars for now because the case is a good product but I really needed a replacement cartridge case. the screen is faulty. However, I still have constant freezing issues after playing for a short time. I even tried a second Raspberry Pi Zero card, as well as another microSD card, thinking there might be something wrong with the first one. It's still freezing. I think there isn't enough air space in the tiny cartridge and the Pi is getting too hot. However, there does not seem to be a common theme in this question. Perhaps the problem lies in the connection of the cartridge with the body. The plug doesn't look like the way I drew it. Retroflag would like to send me a new cartridge to see if that fixes the problem. I contacted Retroflag via email regarding my issue. They seem to be trying to fix the problem as best they can. I will update my review/rating when I can sit down and enjoy my Retroflag GPi case.******************** I was so excited to get one of these while doing it get the first edition. However, the joy about the product quickly turned into disappointment. I followed the installation instructions in the email. I've made sure the GPIO card is secure and the connections are clean. The cartridge slot in the case looks deformed (attached image). The Pi-Zero cartridge doesn't fit very snugly in the case. I have to eject and reinsert the "cartridge" multiple times to get the device to boot without crashing (image attached). Even in this case, the device quickly freezes or crashes on the command line (attached image). I really liked this new case but it looks like it needs to be returned or exchanged. But who knows when I'll get a replacement. I think it would be better if the raspberry pi was integrated into the case somehow, eliminating the possible bad connection between the pi-zero and the case.
