I have used the stone as directed in the brochure and have seen that the stone is in fact polished. This can be confusing for beginners since you only have 1 corner and 2 grains. If your knife has a blade at a different angle, you will be grinding a lot of metal. And the result may not be the best. However, this can probably be remedied with experience. There really is something about these whetstones that confuses you. After a few hits, you'll likely find imperfections like nuggets and rocks embedded in the stone. This interferes with sanding and damages the edge.
