Should be placed at the front of the shower under the controls and shower head. BUT checked how it works on the back end, our new shower is 60 inches long and looked very nice there and kept me from fighting a contractor who insisted on installing a third rail at an angle and me said NO. In the meantime I won and this solved this problem. We didn't include the seat and figured it was an option that we or future owners would add later, but so far we're happy with that dual rail and tray. However, I'm trying to figure out how to get him to sit up better because twice he's come down and fallen on the floor in the shower. But I want it to be loose enough so that it can be pulled out and cleaned from time to time.
