I am using this device with a Celestron NexStar SLT. This is a difficult review to write. I have a significant number of complaints about this device. My iPad 2 occasionally loses its Wi-Fi connection and I have to reconnect. It's a pain as I can't do this without leaving the Skyportal app. Also, directional controls are very cumbersome to use. If you center an object while looking into the eyepiece, there's no haptic feedback to tell you when to click and in which direction, and if you click outside of the arrow's range, you can select a new object and end up tracking it and cancel all your work, which is annoying as hell. Instead, I strongly recommend using the arrow keys on the hand controller to center the eyepiece and not using Skyportal for navigation, or at least only using it when you're looking at the screen. Also, when using an app on my iPad, there is often a significant delay between my interaction with the app and the tapping of the screen taking effect. It's annoying when I try to highlight an object, but when it does, it basically renders the directional control useless. The experience is clunky at best. In addition, there are many unpleasant aspects in the application. If I want to go to a specific RA and DEC I have to look into the 'Settings' menu. It's just bad software design. You should never look into the application settings menu during normal operation. This should be reserved for settings and adjustments. I could make a list of such harassment, but I don't want to waste time on it. Why don't the complete catalogs from Henry Draper and SAO (amongst others) come with the device? Why aren't all common double star catalogs included (e.g. Burnham, Struve, Herschel, etc.)? Why aren't the dark nebula catalogs from Linde and Barnard included? No variable star/carbon star list? This can't be the place, the app weighs a disgustingly bloated 253MB on my iPad. I don't need reviews for anything, just RA and Dec for other directories. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what worries me about this app. I haven't spent a single night with him without finding a good reason to curse him and his developers. However, I have no plans to return. Despite my objections, it's useful enough for me to keep to myself. But I can't help but be disappointed that it's not better. A shame.
