When I first tried this on my dog, she did nothing but rub her nose and throw a fit when she tried to get it out. I spent about a week sitting her down for a short while, giving her treats and making sure this leader was associated with positive experiences. It just didn't seem like it was going to work for her, so I put it aside. Last week I took her out, put her on, treated her and took her for a walk right away. It worked! This time she accepted it. Except for a few moments here and there, she does it great and no longer pulls. It's like walking a completely different dog. I must add that I haven't dated her for almost two weeks (a very long time for her). She got to the point where her front straps were no longer deterrent, so I figured I'd just take a break. After not taking her daily walks for so long, she was more than happy to basically ignore the gentle leader and focus on smelling all the wonderful things she was missing. We're back to our daily walks now. The biggest difference is that I also enjoy going for walks now that I don't have to expend as much energy working on their behavior. I still put a harness on her in case I have to grab her for extra control (which is rare) but I just tie the leash to the leash. I have a leash with a lighter. The leash clip that attaches to the harness is much thicker and heavier. That's all I can say. Soft win-win leader! SECURITY NOTICE UPDATE: I've had a few occasions where I was close to escaping, luckily inside the vet's office. Once the leash somehow came off, and another time she yanked the leash out of her face. Now to double tie, I put the leash on as usual and then use the carabiner to attach the base of the leash clip to the loop in her collar. That way, if she takes the leash off again or the leash comes loose, the leash still stays on her collar. (See attached photo which shows a left and right side comparison showing both parts of what I have described.) I find that this setup causes no problems walking and does not affect the efficiency of the ladder.
