UPDATE (24th November 2015, remove those rubber feet first) and lo and behold I was right, the fan moves a lot more air, a lot more freely than with bars . With no grille, all you have to do is make sure the device is placed on a flat surface so nothing is interfering with the fan's rotation and make sure you don't stick your fingers in the moving fan (but it's a weak fan). fan, so even if you did it wouldn't take away part of the finger or anything). With a 3.5 or 2.5 hard drive in the box, it doesn't bother the fan spinning either, so there's no problem with that. The holes in them are too thin for air to flow through freely. All of the hard drives in this dock still get very hot even with the fan running properly (yes, I checked that the fan is running). From the looks of it, I might as well buy a fanless docking station. I agree with other reviewers who say the door should be left open when transferring data to and/or from this dock. Sabrent should either use other types of gratings with much larger openings, or no gratings at all. I'm going to void the warranty and see if I can take the dock apart and remove the grilles because I'm pretty sure the fan will move air much better without the grilles. We'll see how it goes.
