These relatively inexpensive radios bridge the gap between FRS and more expensive "business" radios without requiring a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) license, which most Humans do not interfere with the use of specific FRS frequencies, or so I have been made to understand. Or maybe it was just us. Anyway, back to the radio: pretty solid, withstood a couple of good falls, and one of us got out in the rain before showing just a slight drop in volume. Very helpful that there is a desktop version of the same radio, a feature I couldn't find when we were using the FRS types. To access the batteries you have to unscrew the belt clip and another screw on the battery cover, but I haven't had any instances where the set of included batteries hasn't charged. Reminds me: whereas with FRS radios, if you wanted to charge the batteries in the unit or use disposable batteries, you had to replace the OEM battery or something similar. Dakota Alerts uses an AA size rechargeable cell bank so readily available replacement units can be found anywhere, at any hardware store or rat shack!
