As I saw that the joints in my right hand were starting to hurt from using the mouse, I switched to using a trackball instead. Before that, I had been using solely mice for a good number of years. It took a few minutes to retrain myself to use the mouse. This is made easier by the fact that the design is a "mouse," and the ball is the only thing that has been added. At the beginning, I would periodically get "stuck," which meant that I would catch myself trying to move the device rather than turning the ball. But, it did not happen very often and it was over very quickly. It is essential to remove the ball on a regular basis in order to clean it, along with the supports and the socket that houses the optical sensor. Simply use a dry cloth to wipe, and don't get too fanatical about it. The outsole is made of rubber, and it performs exceptionally well on flat ground. On the other hand, it shifts, which can be annoying on uneven surfaces (such as unpolished wood or plastic that has been embossed to look like wood). If you have a table like this, the trackball will need to be placed on a mouse pad or anything else that is specifically positioned. And one more thing: the body is pretty high, so in order to prevent the brush from lifting up, I purchased a gel pad to place under my wrist. In all honesty, it's more handy. Because a trackball never moves around as a mouse does, your wrist will not move around on the pillow while you use it, and you will have the freedom to place your hand in whatever position seems most natural to you. Yet, a trackball that has a ball in the middle is more practical and can position the ball with greater precision. Because I use the original Kensington trackball at my day job, I am able to do a comparison. And one more thing: you can't use this item with games that have a lot of movement. At all. Although I've heard of some enthusiasts who enjoy playing Counter-Strike with a trackball, I find such approach to be completely unnecessary.
