Review on Dorman 973 411 Blower Motor Resistor by Jeremy Kakaruk

Perfect fit and functionality.

The air conditioning and heating in my 2001 Ford Ranger only worked at high speeds. I did some googling and all the signs pointed to the fan motor resistance. This kit had everything I needed. I wasn't sure if I needed the connector that came with the kit. Ideally I would just like to unplug the old resistor and plug in the new one. But over time it seems like the existing connector to the resistor was burnt and I couldn't remove it without damaging it. The new one comes with crimp connectors, but I didn't have a good crimping tool, so I just used a soldering iron. I took a picture of the existing connection first so I knew what color the wire went where, then I cut the wires off the old connector, soldered in the new one and taped the connections around. I can regain all my fan speeds from low to high. It was a good buy. Note: One of the online instructions for replacing this resistor said I had to remove the windshield washer reservoir to get to the fan motor. I started with this but found on my Ranger that the expansion tank is a one piece molding with a radiator coolant tank. Instead of going that route, I found I could squeeze my hand and a small socket wrench (with an extension) to remove and replace the resistor. It was very hard compression and annoying at times - there was very little room to turn the ratchet so it took quite a while to remove (and replace) the bolts holding the resistor in the motor housing.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Slightly wrinkled
