Review on πŸ’» Dell WD15 Monitor Dock 4K: Ultimate USB-C Docking Solution with 130W Adapter (450-AFGM), Black by Dan Olsen

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Exactly the right docking station for my Dell Inspiron!

This is exactly what I was looking for. I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 13 2-in-1 laptop (purchased August 2016) with Windows 10 that I use on my desktop as much as I use it on the road. I was looking for something that would allow me to have a full desktop experience at home with just one cable plugged into my laptop and it fit the bill. I was able to use all of my old (and I used my old) peripherals - VGA monitor, USB keyboard and mouse - and it worked right out of the box. All peripherals connect to ports on the back of the box, freeing up desk space, and the only front-facing ports are the ones you might want to plug and unplug cables more often: a headphone/headset jack and two USB 3.0 ports. On the back I have an Ethernet cable, a VGA cable, a USB cable for the keyboard, a USB dongle for the wireless mouse, a USB dongle for the software license key, and an audio cable for my speakers. And thanks to the included power adapter/power delivery, I can keep my portable power adapter in my laptop bag when traveling without having to buy a second one for my home office. I only use one monitor so can't speak to its ability to run 2 monitors at once. It has 3 video ports (VGA, Mini-DP and HDMI) but I read that you can only use a 4K monitor or 2 lower resolution monitors at the same time. They used to call it "Triple 4K Dock," but seem to have heeded complaints that it only supports a 4K monitor and changed the name. The device came with a notice to update the computer to the latest BIOS. WD15 version and driver before connecting this docking station. My laptop was new enough to have the latest version so I just plugged everything in and it worked. By the way, I can leave my laptop closed at home when it's docked. There's a "Sleep" button in the top-right corner of the dock that puts the laptop to sleep (quicker than a few clicks on Windows), and I can wake the laptop up by pressing a key on the keyboard or mine mouse move . This is a laptop configuration that allows you to do this, but I believe the WD15 does not prevent keyboard/mouse signals from being sent to the laptop when it is asleep. These devices cost $199 from Dell at the time of this review, but I only paid $89 for Revain. I wasn't expecting to get a brand new device given the price and of course it came in an open box from Kazba. So don't be surprised if you get the same. The unit looked brand new and came in a plastic box and as I mentioned it worked great right out of the box. Maybe the device was returned to Dell and resold to Kasba, I don't know. But I think it was a fair price even though it wasn't in a sealed box. And I ordered it on Thursday and received it from Kasba on Monday.
