Great for the base of our stairs. The posts are 41 1/2 inches apart. We used a gate and a 12 inch extension. We had to place it on the first step instead of the ground as it wouldn't hold the curved part of our posts. I've used the screws and brackets that came with it and so far the fit is very secure. Great for our dogs and toddlers. Our smallest dog is a 5 lb shorty and won't fit between the bars. The largest dog weighs almost 90 pounds and she holds herself up well jumping up and putting her front paws on. Toddlers (18m & 3yrs) haven't got their limbs wedged between the bars and figured out the latch like they've done with baby gates in the past, so I'm really hoping for that. We had the last gate but my 6 and 9 year olds can now (after repeated attempts) open it on their own. At first I was concerned as I can't always step in and do it for them but they stuck. Many reviews complain that the latch doesn't fasten when it arrives and that it's widely spaced, but that's how all gates like it. it is work. The latch comes together when tightened. You know the gate is secure when the deadbolt fits. In addition, the gates open in both directions. This simplifies installation as you don't have to worry about positioning it correctly. For the price and considering our needs I think it was a good buy.
