Calibrations don't start at the end of the ruler, so measuring from the surface isn't possible. The calibration marks are already deleted. I just wanted a cheap metric/imperial ruler to check things when I'm drawing in CAD or to scale drawings more easily. I have a lot of cheap 6 inch port rulers that I use all the time and have had for years, still the same as the day I bought them. It's embarrassing even to call it a line.
