I first bought the "small" one for my Shiba. (He's a little taller than most Shiba, but his height doesn't vary too much.) The neck was perfect and the body part was good enough to show for his size, but the girth (around the chest, under the body ) was a bit tight. So I just added an extra piece of Velcro. I also cut a hole in the top and sewed it on like a loop for use with a hiking harness. I use it almost every day to run on busy streets. Then I bought a "medium" - the neck is a bit big, but that means the normal leash hole on the collar slips a bit down his back, and I didn't have to make a new hole to attach it to the back strap. The strap fits perfectly. The body part is also longer on the sides and back so it also acts as a very light rain cover on foggy rainy days. (I live in a hot and humid area, so a regular raincoat is basically not suitable.) I definitely recommend this product (orange) and will buy both small and medium again when mine gets old or dirty. If you're giving one as a gift maybe go a little bigger to be safe, but adding an extra velcro strap works great and never falls off. will still stand for me to do although he is a rescued stray dog I was given as an adult - I think that means he finds it convenient. However, one of his "friends" was a bit surprised when he first saw his bright orange body, so be careful not to startle other dogs as they seem to be able to see the color clearly.
