Review on Enhanced Netgear FR114P Firewall Cable/DSL Router with Print Server by Terry Moore

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good but better routers available

Netgear routers were generally their weakest and least reliable products, as opposed to their switches and hubs. I have used Netgear RT338 ISDN routers in the past and they lasted less than 2 years before failing. I believe FR114P will last around 3-4 years in our office before DNS, reboots and other failures. They work great, although there are no problems starting. We just keep some of them as backups and then flash them with the latest updates from the Netgear website. I think they're still better than Netgears' latest router offerings based on the complaints I see on their forums. Unfortunately, Netgear's support, which was great until 2004, quickly faded. Update 8/14/14: I got rid of those Netgear routers 5 years ago and switched to ZyXel P334 wired routers which have never missed a beat since 2010. The only downside is the 12/12 Mbps limitation. Now they have been replaced by TP-LinkR470T+ routers with a speed limit of 100/100 Mbps.
