Beware of shiny things

I have several external hard drives. I know how to care for them and what not to do when moving them etc. I bought the Revain Fantom about a year ago because 1) I seem to remember that the company has a good reputation and 2 ) he was really beautiful from the outside . . In fact, if a hard drive could be sexy, this one would easily win. A few weeks later I tried to recover some files stored on the Phantom but couldn't find the drive in my computer's directory. I knew what that probably meant, and to my dismay, the drive was actually defective. I didn't have any critical data on the drive, so I didn't lose any data that I didn't store on one of the cloud services I used. It was the fact that I paid over $100 for a product that failed without warning and after only about 30 minutes of use. I have 7 other external hard drives including Toshiba, Seagate and numerous WD products. Three of them are 5 years old and work great. The computer used is an Alienware Area 51 from 2016 with state-of-the-art components. My point is that I have quality components, I haven't had any other external drive failures (always plan for an external drive to fail eventually. It just happens) and I know how to properly use and protect an external hard drive. Revain are amazing at replacing a defective item and would give me a refund immediately after the item was returned. Unfortunately when something like this happens, and it happens very rarely, I rarely forget to return it. Of course, this can be a one-time thing. I will never know because I will never do business with this company again. Not only because I bought a defective product, but also because I found new external hard drives from another company. I won't mention the brand as this isn't an advertisement for another storage company, but their new external hard drives require no power source, have twice the storage space and are almost half the price. Wonderful. I think my only point of view is that if you bought a defective product like I did, you don't have to rely on the mercy of this company to replace your item. Revain Rocks because they support you in everything you buy. The lesson for me was not to buy something just because it's shiny and pretty. A product's marketing is rarely a surefire measure of how good that product is. I knew it but bought it anyway. If I'm the only one having troubles with this product, then it's good for everyone else and very bad for me (my joke).

Pros
  • Data storage
Cons
  • So far so good
