The paper is smooth, but it's not critical.
This is the perfect "exercise mat" if you will. Inexpensive and high-quality paper with a dense cardboard backing. Ideal for painting on a sunny day on a patio with a piece of charcoal. The only downside (and it depends on the taste of the paper) is that some find the smooth surface a problem as some people prefer paper with more teeth. But that is a personal matter.
