I installed this filter and after 2 months a gray spot started appearing below the waterline in the toilets in my home. I was stumped until, just for fun, I pulled out the filter and examined it. Of course, the inner core was as black as the outer. Carbon penetrated the polypropylene sediment core and entered my house. Not sure what ill effects this could have, but the staining was bad enough. By the way, the gray stain on toilet dishes is not that easy to remove - it really is a stain and it took many long sessions to get it to look normal. I replaced the filter with a new, carbon-free one, and the discoloration stopped completely.
