If you have problems, it's not a wick and it's easy to fix. Get them wet first! =)

I have two Vornado EVDC300 that work in VERY dry climate all the time. They do an excellent job at a humidity level of 15% to 40-45%. HOWEVER - you need to properly maintain them and understand how they work. I've seen reviews stating tanks leak - no they don't, in fact this base can leak if you insert the wick incorrectly causing the wick to draw in water and then drip over the edge of the base. I've seen reviews that say these wicks don't draw water in - yes, but fully wetting them before inserting helps. This serves two purposes - to make them more flexible and to allow them to be used properly. It also triggers an absorbing effect, if you lay it dry it may never fully absorb to the top. air in the tank), a wick that was working normally will stop sucking. This is easy to notice in dry climates as you suddenly don't need to fill up the tank every day - in which case just pour water over the wick (some might spit out the vents, just wipe it down) and it will help. started again. This type of evaporative humidifier may not be for everyone β€” if you prefer to set it and forget it, you might prefer a mist humidifier. HOWEVER - the reason I love them is that they only add moisture to the air. Misting humidifiers work by using ultrasonic waves to "explode" the water, creating a mist that contains whatever is in the water. Pollutants or minerals get into your air so you really should be using distilled water in it, but I wouldn't want it. Buying tons of plastic water bottles just to fill my humidifiers. I don't mind maintaining evaporative blockages or dealing with the occasional wick fuss.
