Heavy-gauge stainless steel rods with fairly close spacing, well constructed and nicely finished. The most important part is their length — many replacement grates won't properly fit older Weber Genesis (1000-3000) grills, particularly those that have a bit of "bowing" to the aluminum cooking chamber. These are actually slightly longer than even Weber's grates, and fit perfectly with very little movement, even in the center. I believe these to be the very best value in replacement grates for the Weber Genesis.
