My wife uses patches in small pieces to repair a handmade heirloom quilt. The white backing of the quilt has deteriorated so badly that individual binding threads have pulled through it in several places. Small patches of white iron on the patches provide the inexpensive fabric strength needed locally to carry spare bands, at least temporarily. When enough patches have accumulated it will replace the entire backing, but until then it's a quick, inexpensive and effective way to protect your quilt from further wear and tear and keep it in working order.
