Eats batteries like crazy

I bought four packs of walkie talkies for my family so my wife wouldn't have to keep yelling at our sons about getting food, doing their chores, etc. The family loved them and in the first 5 days they worked fine - good sound, easy to program and it was just a cool memory of my childhood using walkie talkies. Fast forward 5 days and my wife was wondering why our sons didn't recognize her. I looked at the phone, it was off. I hit the power button, turned it back on and was able to transmit once before it turned off again (i.e. died). I scolded my youngest as he is notorious for mixing old and new batteries so I put in all four batteries, replaced them with new ones and her phone turned on with no problem. At dinner tonight the kitchen radio didn't work again and I asked my sons to bring theirs and they were dead too. With 4 AAA batteries I've spent almost as much on batteries as I have on phones! I actually read the instructions BEFORE putting the batteries in and programming - something I don't normally do. I thought I remembered seeing the power saving mode and before signing up to leave this review I went through the instructions again and if the phone is idle for 6 seconds it naturally switches to the energy saving mode. In other words, I didn't mess it up by not reading the instructions ;-) Tomorrow I'll be returning my purchase and looking for another set. I recommend spending a little more money and choosing a set that doesn't eat up batteries any faster than my son's Xbox controller!
