Review on LG 27UN850 W: Borderless DisplayHDR Monitor with Adjustable Stand, USB Hub, and High Dynamic Range by Mortimer Avikunthak

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great for a more casual PS5 experience.

I bought this monitor because it would be so versatile in my setup. However, the main use is with my PS5. I didn't feel like using an hdmi 2.1 4k TV as a display, so I opted for a 4k monitor at 60Hz. This fits exactly what I was looking for. 60Hz is fine for the games I play, but maybe not for you. I've heard that HDMI 2.1 monitors are coming this year, so maybe wait if 60Hz isn't enough for you. Now for the rating. I am very picky about my visual and audio experience and this monitor has met my expectations. Out of the box I really didn't like the colours, brightness and sharpness. it just didn't have the popularity of the LG 34gn850 even though it was 4k and the 34gn850 was 1440p. After setting up what I could with HDR enabled, I was slightly happier but still unimpressed. Then I disabled HDR and everything changed. I screwed up my settings and used high-level super-resolution and it changed my entire perception. I was very impressed. HDR just messed up the colors on the PS5. They just didn't pop. In my opinion, HDR is useless and I wouldn't recommend it. The super resolution drew a lot of hate in the reviews I read and maybe it's bad if used as a regular monitor, but as a gaming monitor this high-end option was perfect for me. I think it's worth buying a newer version with this feature than an old monitor like ul and uk if you use it for gaming. Super resolution gets a 10/10 as a feature from me. Black levels are the main issue here. The black is almost gray no matter what settings you try. It doesn't bother me at all and it's a 34gn850 issue. I think it's just an ips monitor. Before that I used an hp2511x tn panel and it had much better black levels but poorer viewing angles. I guess it all comes down to preference when it comes to tn/ips/va but I still think ips is the best. Color accuracy and color vibrancy make IPS a winner for me. Response time is normal. I didn't do any technical analysis but it's no different than the tn bar I used which was also 5ms. Just make sure you set FreeSync to Advanced in Settings and Response Time to Faster. This monitor is great if you go through all the settings and tweak it to your liking. The colors are striking, the super resolution is excellent. Response times are good and 4k is obviously its main selling point. The cons aren't enough to give it less than 5 stars, but I've seen people have issues with black levels.
