The plastic base used to hold the cap is not stable unless you remove the nut from the toilet screw, install the plastic base, and then reinsert the nut to secure it. The cap is then snapped onto this base, covering the screw. For me - with an old house and toilets with corroded bolts - it would be difficult to just remove the nut without removing it. Whether you're looking for a McGiver-type solution or the perfect setup, they don't work.
