Review on Magnavox MWD200G DVD Player by Justin Hollins

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Only for old TVs!

I bought this cheap DVD player from Wal-Mart after my Playstation 2 stopped loving DVDs. It cost $30. Included with the player: 1 composite cable (yellow, for video), 2 stereo cables (red and white, for audio), 1 remote control, 2 AAA batteries, 1 user manual. When I unpacked it, I was surprised at how small it was. It's deeper than it is wide, allowing it to fit into any entertainment center. Installation was seemingly simple: plug it in, connect the video and audio to your TV, and insert the batteries into the remote control. The first movie I saw on it was Borat, in case you're wondering. The player has additional outputs for coaxial (5.1 surround sound) audio and S-Video. No component or optical outputs for more expensive TVs! I bought a separate S-Video cable to use this player with my 10 year old 27" RCA TV. If your TV has an S-Video input, I highly recommend using that. That; S-Video carries separate signals for color and brightness, so the colors in your movie don't mix like they do with normal (yellow) composite cables. The difference is very obvious. Although the picture quality is very good, it tends to "flicker". "A couple of times during the film in my experience. The brightness fluctuates for a split second, which bothers me. However, this only happens a couple of times during use and my roommate doesn't notice, if it happens it may even be because of my connection (the TV is over ten years old) so there may not be a problem with the player, it's very good Widescreen movies are played in the correct aspect ratio (some DVD players "flatten" the widescreen on the sides to fit a standard TV) with no fuss. also very light and has many buttons (love to play with the ZOOM function). I've tried this player with burned DVD-R discs and they play without any problems. It takes a few seconds for the player to recognize the disc, so be careful. I heard it works with DVD+R too, but I haven't tried it. It doesn't play VCDs or SVCDs, but it does play MP3 CDs (good for parties if you have a good stereo). This is a very good turntable for the price but I would only recommend it for old or modern budget TVs. If your device has component (red, green, blue) inputs, buy another player with those outputs.
