Review on ASICS Gel Sonoma Graphite Men's Athletic Running Shoes by Suhas Payton

Don't hit the slopes - bring back the Gel Kahana 8!

I walk/run about 6-7 miles a day, mostly on a combination of gravel, grass and sand. I bought these as they were listed after searching the ASICS website for my preferences and requirements and they fit. After wearing it for three days, my stamina and performance decreased noticeably. That claim is hard to believe, but they are vastly inferior to the previous iteration from ASICS, which I bought several pairs - the Gel Kahana 8 - and are no longer available. production and I can not source. Walking the trail with them, after only 3 miles I felt significant discomfort, not in the seat but in my knees, shins (everywhere) and hips. I made it to the 7 mile mark which isn't usually a big deal to me but now I've paid the price with leg and knee pain which I normally never have. I've experienced this before when I bought a different shoe instead of the Gel Kahana 8 and felt a hit to my performance so I went back to the Kahana 8. I think it's luck to some degree, but I suspect the support, build quality, and materials fell. These shoes also allow sand/fine mud to pass through the mesh, which was never the case with the Kahana 8 despite a similar mesh, and you can feel it after a few miles. I cleaned them of sand and dirt after my return. I'm not very good at the physiology of running or walking long distances, but whatever ASICS did or didn't do with them had a huge impact on my personal stats. Unfortunately, my old Gel Kahana 8s were almost destroyed, but even on my last day of using them, I was still able to get out and trail run a good 8 miles without feeling uncomfortable. Just my personal experience.

Pros
  • So comfortable and supportive. I am 11 weeks old and it helps all day as a stylist also dealing with achilles tendonitis.
Cons
  • Shoes may need to be broken in before they are comfortable to wear.
