Review on Fujitsu ScanSnap iX1500 Color Duplex Document Scanner with Touch Screen - White Model (2020 Release) for Mac and PC by David Cronin

Have high hopes. Good hardware, mediocre software.

After using my trusty S1500 for almost a decade, I've updated it (although it has a lot more life in it). Conclusion: I was very excited as he gnawed at my papers. The new scan buttons and profiles are cool and maybe a step forward. But I'd be much happier if they just stuck to the basics and didn't include that Scansnap cloud crap and improved the mechanism for guessing filenames from a document. . The check app works great. It copes well with documents, receipts of various sizes and business cards. The touchscreen is cool, but not necessary unless you're scanning over Wi-Fi. I hope it will be as durable as my S1500 but the software makes me a little nervous. (I mainly work on Mac OS) I love how new software can sometimes guess the date and a reasonable filename. I would be in seventh heaven if it was better. The included kofax powerPDF and ABBY Fine Reader are also welcome (although you'll have to do a little digging on the site to get them). I'm a little confused by the Scansnap cloud. It doesn't have file syncing (like you'd expect from a "cloud" service). Instead, it appears to perform online file processing before sending them to another cloud service. I'm not sure I understand the importance of this device. I assume this is for wifi scanning - specific to your phone? It has the features of the iPhone but is split between two apps (which I think is stupid). Scansnap Cloud IOS app can scan with your camera and send to Scansnap cloud and then to another cloud storage service. But there is no way to send to Scansnap Home even if Scansnap home is in a cloud folder like Onedrive or Dropbox. I called tech support to clarify how the Scansnap cloud works and what its limitations are. I didn't wait long for a specialist and she answered my questions quite well (although I was disappointed with the answers). I don't need the Scansnap anyway, but I need to be logged in to use the scanner. I have a feeling this could be a security issue when scanning confidential documents. I'd rather get rid of it entirely. I just want the documents to be sent to the desktop and processed there. I'm not 100% sure I've completely disabled sending to the cloud. The Scansnap Home desktop application is a joke. One would think that over the last 20 years there have been some improvements in this type of document management application bundled with mid-range scanners. That's more trouble than it's worth, and generally a bad idea. It's a great scanner for creating searchable PDFs quickly and belongs to a family of bulletproof workhorses. I just think they overdid it by adding features and making drastic changes to the software with the help of mediocre software engineers. It's hard to give stars as my opinion is based on my positive experience with the S1500 and so much is familiar to Scansnap users. I also only had a few days and have only scanned a few hundred pages so far and I don't feel like I fully explored and understood the cloud component. But honestly, I don't think I should do that. You should clarify how the cloud component works and how it can be deactivated.
