Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great lens for the price

Before this lens I only had Nikon lenses. I was hesitant to buy a third party lens and had a long argument about this lens and Nikon versions with the same focal length. I ended up ordering a Tokina lens because of the price and have been pleasantly surprised ever since. Build quality is excellent and on par with Nikon lenses. It feels solid, the focus ring is smooth but maybe a little looser than the Nikon lenses I own. He's not bad, just different. The lens is sharp, sharp, and focusing is quick and quiet. The manual focus clutch is pretty handy. Just press the focus ring and it will lock into manual focus. Cons: There is some distortion, but I didn't find it that noticeable. I don't try to fix it when I edit my photos. Flare can also occur when shooting directly into the sun, but these can usually be avoided fairly easily. You may have to use your hand to block out the direct sun. On one or two occasions I've had purple color rubs with very contrasting objects like a tree and a bright sky, but it's not that noticeable. As I said, I've only noticed this once or twice out of hundreds of shots when zooming in in my editing software. So all lenses have a few minor flaws, but I don't know of any ultra wide-angle lens that doesn't have them. I still give it 5 stars because the price is $200 or more cheaper compared to Nikon lenses and I don't think the Nikon versions perform much better. I was really surprised by this lens and have already taken many great shots. I've shot quite a bit with it in almost every situation and have not been disappointed. I won't hesitate to buy another Tokina lens when they release a few more with a built in autofocus motor. Update: Lightroom 4.1 now has lens correction for this lens. Makes a simple correction possible if necessary.
