So this detector 'might' have saved our lives today if we hadn't left the house when we did (thanks to mom's instincts). Lightning struck our new home this morning and electricity flowed through our electrical system and from the outlet behind the stove. A spark started a fire that destroyed our kitchen, but thanks to thunder we woke up anyway to check on the kids, immediately smelled the fire and got out a few minutes after the impact. The fire chief said that when they got there, only that sensor had tripped. After 10 minutes the smoke alarms (which also have built in carbon monoxide alarms) went off. Carbon monoxide is a heavy gas and you need a ground sensor to pick up the gas. By the time he reaches the ceiling detectors, it's too late. According to the fire chief, this particular detector would have saved our lives. (And I have to admit I was nervous because it's such a cheap detector, but based on today's experience I'm buying it for everyone I know!)
