Review on JBL Live Free NC Plus - True Wireless Earbuds with Active Noise Cancelling, Bluetooth, Microphone, Up to 21 Hours Battery Life, Wireless Charging (Blue) by Angie Christensen

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Quirky and a bit difficult to choose from

My first impression of these headphones was very unfavorable. The sound was very flat, and most importantly, there was a lack of bass. Support helped me perform a factory reset (after taking both earbuds out of the case and turning them on, quickly double-tap the right earbud, then hold the third tap for five seconds). I then repaired them and found that the sound improved somewhat. I've also used the JBL Headphones app to set up a custom EQ that fills in more bass, and I've found that the resulting audio quality is finally close to what I was expecting. These are ANC headphones and the noise-cancelling seems pretty decent. (Actually, this might be too good for running, but there is a setting in the app for the environment I want to use for running that should help at least a little). They are compatible with wireless charging, which is nice. And the body is fairly compact (and charges, since it has its own battery, which is a great feature). In terms of fit I would say ok. I had to try all three silicone cases that came with it, but the fit still feels a bit wonky. I think the fit is a bit subjective, but it might not be the best option for outdoor activities, especially since the sound quality decreases as the fit gets looser. However, at least they don't fall out when running. There are several functions. First, there is no volume control. You need to set it up on your device. Second, they were very touchy at first (every time I needed to adjust the fit, they beeped and fell silent even if I just touched the sides, not the front button). But a factory reset helped here too. So maybe there is a software issue that can be fixed with a reset. Or maybe mine were just too fancy. So if you're having trouble, try a reset. Finally, they seem to lose signal from time to time even when I'm sitting right next to my phone. All in all, given the issues, they were a bit difficult to rate. Now that I've reset them and adjusted them to my preferences using the in-app equalizer, I'm pretty happy with the sound quality. They have a clear and full sound. The fit is fine and they are not particularly comfortable or uncomfortable. So I'm not sure if they are really worth the price. Maybe other reviewers have better luck, so maybe it depends in part on the shape of your ear. So I would say 3.5 stars.
