The filter is 5 star quality. In order for the filter to be able to do its job, however, it puts up a lot of resistance to the air flow. By slowing down the air speed, the filter can collect finer dust particles. But with this resistance, the system works longer to push warmer air out of the house. It also puts a strain on the system as it tries to overcome the extra airflow resistance. In an ideal system, there should be no filter resistance. The fiberglass main filter has the lowest resistance but cannot trap dust particles and allergens. The next stage, the white cotton flat filter improves dust and allergen capture with low airflow resistance. The pleated cotton filter provides additional resistance to improve particle collection and increase airflow resistance. The trade-off is longer runtime to complete the cooling/heating task versus fewer particles. With only one exhaust register, 14 x 14, I opted for a flat cotton filter to effectively support 1200m². ft. living area.
