This is a simple pleated paper cartridge that performs very well - a particle size of five microns means it removes most (but not all) impurities and minerals from water. However, we have fairly high water pressure and this seemed to distort the filter and reduce its effectiveness fairly quickly. I replaced it with a more expensive filter that uses both charcoal and paper and is surrounded by a metal mesh. It seems to be holding its shape better. My guess is that unless you have a major or chemical problem with your water source, this will suffice for a basic drinking water system as long as your pressure isn't too high. It's always worth checking how many gallons each filter is rated for - this tells you how long it will last. Often you will find that a more expensive filter will hold many more gallons before it wears out or clogs, and will end up costing you less over its lifetime. Also, you don't have to change the filters as often, which can sometimes be a problem.
