Lasted 7 weeks: Datastore

Bought this 26th February. He died on the evening of April 14th...right after the return window, of course. As soon as I opened the package upon arrival, I had the feeling that it was cheap plastic junk. He seemed fragile and light. The case was slightly deformed when I grabbed it. Then I plugged it in and started transferring some files and setting it up for Time Machine backups and I found that the speeds were pretty slow even over Thunderbolt3. I just didn't trust this drive any more than a redundant backup. He didn't go anywhere; never traveled with me. It just sat on the table as a backup for my current but full backup drive. Then tonight I wanted to go through some of the tax documents I had stored on it and it wouldn't even mount. Just a popup window saying drive not found. And every few seconds, what I can assume was a smack on the head, came out a screech. What a waste of $90. I mean, I never intended to store anything really important in this thing or be my only backup, but really... seven weeks?! And he didn't even move from the table? To yell out loud you'd think I used this thing to practice hitting how disastrously it failed. Maybe one in a million failures. Many other reviewers like this disc; not me. That experience certainly motivated me to seriously consider an SSD at this point just for the potential for more reliability, as it's sort of the most important attribute in a backup drive.

Pros
  • Stable test results
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
