I attached 2x4s to my garage ceiling joists and then spaced these hooks 18" to 24" apart so I could hang my bikes from the ceiling and off the garage floor could. I positioned the hooks so that you can either hang them on bike 1 where they hang lower, or hang each bike on both wheels, raising them higher off the ground (e.g. car you park in the garage). Unless you have exposed studs to screw them in like I do where my garage is drywall, I highly recommend hanging 2x4s on those studs and then screwing those hooks into 2x4s. I also pre-drilled small holes in 2x4s , before I screw in the hooks and use a hammer handle or similar as leverage to screw the hook in once you start doing this - makes turning the hook easier.
