Works until it works

Has worked perfectly for several months. I don't leave it all the time. I turn it on at night and turn it off when I go to bed. The remote control no longer works. I changed the batteries and it worked again for a month and then died again. There is a switch on the cable that I found and used instead. But after a year that switch also stopped working, so now it doesn't work at all.
