Review on ๐Ÿšด POC Tectal Race Spin Mountain Biking Helmet by Josh Flanagan

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Spin = Snake Oil good for cycling

This is just an overview of "spin" pads. Overall the Tectal is a great helmet and I have another. However, I consider spin pads to be a gimmick. I bought this for extra protection as I really like Tectal but immediately sent it back. I tried pressing it with different forces and moving it on my head in different ways and compared it to my existing helmet. Both helmets moved the same way on my head - in other words, they moved the same way on my skull when pressed against my head - and that's coming from a person who fits the Tectal head shape very well. Hair and scalp glide a lot more than spin pads or regular pads and I honestly don't see how this could provide additional spin protection in the real world. The pads are quite thin, don't cover much of my scalp, don't cover the back of my head at all, and as I said, they don't seem to move any more than regular pads when pressed against my head in different directions. . In my opinion only one way to make more money. I would avoid it and just go with the regular Tectal (which again is a great helmet and otherwise meets the safety and comfort requirements). I'm glad new technologies are being explored, but I think we need to be more open about testing and evidence, not just smart YouTube videos. Otherwise the technology in the market will not really advance and people will continue to spend more without understanding why, with a false sense of security. Spin and MIPS are tricks in my book and I've tried both. I'm still looking for new technology and will keep researching, but I won't pull the trigger again until I see more data and tests, not just videos and slogans.

Pros
  • Great construction
Cons
  • I vaguely remember
