I was very impressed by this mini dynamo. There are two models of this router. One has a radio, the other doesn't. For an extra $10, it's worth having a radio to set up separately. One thing that drew me to this router is the VPN capabilities of the Open-WRT firmware it has. This broom almost seems to have been designed with VPN in mind. Gone are the agonizing setups for OpenVPN or Wiireguard as this firmware simplifies setup. If you're already subscribed to a VPN provider that I can recommend at a discounted price, this router will get you connected in literally seconds. It stores multiple profiles for OpenVPN as well as Wireguard. Traveling to another country or city is a point and click operation. The firmware also has key features like a built-in kill switch, so you're not left unprotected if your Internet VPN goes down. The internet will just disconnect you until the VPN reconnects. If you follow a reputable company, there will be very few disconnects like this. It also has what is called Adguard FREE. which behind the scenes removes annoying pop-ups, website redirects or in-page ads, making clickbait reading much more enjoyable. This adguard can also be disabled with one click. This router has so many built-in features that there are too many to mention and you can scroll down the firmware to find many settings that are easy to explain. The open WRT community is always willing to help you, but I also found the manufacturer of this router to be so helpful, which refreshed the situation from the manufacturer's point of view. I emailed Alfie on GLi.net and received a very helpful reply within 24 hours. Some of the responses were very detailed which shows me that GLi.net as a company genuinely cares about making sure you get the most out of their products. Without going too far into the specifics of the firmware as they are all well documented, let me just talk about the performance. The router it replaced always failed OpenVPN so badly that it cut my bandwidth in half. This router barely sweats when running an open VPN, and I really didn't notice any change in throughput with the VPN on or off. Wireguard did the same. As I said in my opening remarks, the VPN is probably what led me to this model and I am not disappointed with the purchase. At the moment all my traffic goes through it and it doesn't seem to be a bottleneck but then again I'm not pushing gigabit through the van so performance may vary but so far for my needs it meets my needs. There's even an external switch that turns the VPN on or off and can be set in the firmware for other operations. It's not the only gili.net product I own, but it's by far the fastest. If you've been looking for geolocation routers for your media centers and TVs, this open WRT firmware is very similar across the board, and setting up a TV for one country and your media box for another can be as easy as adding another routers. I have one of their cheaper $20 routers just for the Chromecast and TV and a Brume router for the rest of the traffic. I've owned it for almost a year now and felt it deserved a review as did the company for their outstanding customer service. Choosing a VPN service can be quite confusing as some are less than expected when it comes to the logs stored, speed, the features they are said to have and some much-needed security. Most of them come with apps covering almost every operating system, but if you're tired of the evenings every time you want to connect one of these routers, this will save you a lot of hassle. Suddenly, the router handles all of your VPN needs behind the scenes for everyone who connects to it. This way you no longer have to worry about little Johnny or that guest who was here last week downloading something through your connection that will track you because with the right setup you are anonymous. I'm happy to help you choose the router and service that best suits your needs. Gone are the days when you could trust free VPN services or even TOR (the onion router) with the latest news on who is actually running some of those endpoints you trusted to be anonymous. It's difficult enough to navigate this world without encountering less ruthless people along the way. If I can be of any help to you, just let me know. edge
