This article is a hard water hero. Here's the story. Soft water has 17 ppm. Very hard water - 180 ppm. My well produces water with a hardness of 600 ppm. On a bad day, if you hold a clear jar up to the sun, you'll see anvils and cannonballs circling. We use fabric softener for dishwashers and sinks. Everything else is straight out of the well. For a while I replaced traditional elements every year or so. Installed one of these and it took SIX YEARS! 50 gallon tank. 4 people in the house. If I did even the slightest maintenance, it might still work. The thing is not only robust, but also cheaper in the long run. Here are some tips. Keep in mind that I am not a professional plumber or building inspector. Check with both and the dog catcher before taking my advice, or better yet, just read this for educational and entertainment purposes. In this part of the country there is a lot of lime and calcium in the well water. Deposits on plumbing fixtures and residues in the water heater are confirmed. I only tested for hardness, not composition. Different water compositions lead to different results. There was a lot of sediment in the heater above the element level which probably killed it after 6 years of conscientious service. .My maintenance plan for the future is to install a large ball valve instead of a drain valve so I can regularly drain the sediment through a makeshift hose. The ball valve allows a direct shot to insert the rod to remove the sediment. Your best bet is to turn off the heat and have someone take a long shower to cool the water. When they come out of the shower blue and shivering, it's cold enough to work. Use the inlet valve to reduce flow, then fully open the ball valve to remove debris. A stick can be helpful here. It gets chaotic because it's at ground level. With any luck, the makeshift pipe will send the sediment straight into the bucket. I think about it every year because when the element finally gave off heat it warped and made removal quite difficult. I would like to avoid this in the future and the maintenance is to extend the life of the product.
