The ignition control module is a common malfunction on older ones.

The ignition control unit often fails in older Audi and VW vehicles. In my case it failed on my 99 A4 and caused a CEL reporting random misfires. 5 minutes to replace a part and no more check engine lights. I installed the new part within a few weeks and have had no problems since.
