I replaced my MacBook Air 2015 128MB drive with a Timetec 512MB. Made a timeshift backup, loaded the Catalina OS and created a bootable flash drive. Opened the MacBook Air, disconnected the battery and then replaced the Apple drive with Timetec. I connected the battery and booted into recovery mode from a USB stick. Opened up Disk Utility and formatted Timetec to APFS, then went back into Utilities, installed Catalina and restored my files using Timeshift. Worked great. Later upgraded to Big Sur. No problem.
