Cannot drive 4K displays better than 1080p

I bought this to replace a Satechi multiport that was driving 4K LG UHD via HDMI. According to the monitor specs, I should get 4K @ 60Hz through the DisplayPort input. When using a CableDeconn hub, I can only get up to 1080p resolution through the HDMI port or the Display port. :(. Also, the small short cable makes it difficult to get out of the storage area. A short cable is required; you can't use any other Thunderbolt 3 cable. I think that's why most of the ones you see are short cables have (the one connecting to the Mac) permanently connected to the device.
