I wanted them to go through 4" x 4" wooden posts, which they do, but are with plastic post grommets they are about half an inch too short, so take into account that I will have to look for another product, but that's up to me. The benefit is that you can easily apply more force, which I see as a major benefit over straight upset fittings. They are made of heavily plated metal or polished stainless steel (can't tell) and look very nice.
