Now that most people in my area are renovating rather than adding extensions or building new homes, I've found that the same textures stick in existing painted surfaces. Obviously, new areas of drywall dry out the texture at a different rate than existing non-porous painted surfaces. I was left with 2 options. Either apply a layer of caulk to the entire area or fill the entire area with soil. Both need more time. In desperation I bought a demolition knife and that solved the problem. This allows me to adjust the pressure I put on the knife exactly as needed, with no spatula marks or ups and downs. This is because the knife is so light that you don't have to press as hard as you would with a metal butter knife or any metal knife you use for buttering that has a flat surface. You can apply as much or as little pressure as you need and chop off sooner than before you bought this knife. Just keep the knife clean with each pass when you need light pressure. Try it, I'm not laughing now.
