We chose this item because competing products had reviews with photos of melted timers at the exit (obvious fire hazard). We would draw at most 1 or 2 amps with this outlet timer, but didn't want to risk it. The Honeywell 40957 Socket Timer is CSA listed (similar to UL listing but CSA was introduced in Canada). And it's made in China by Jasco Products Company LLC (an American company based in Oklahoma, founded in 1975). We were able to set the time before plugging it in, so there must be a built-in battery, which I haven't seen. called. To set the time, press the up/down arrow button. If you hold them down, the minutes will change quickly. Four preset buttons (which we'll never use) make a very simple device cluttered. To set your own on/off schedule: 1. Press the "ON TIME" button and then use the arrow buttons to set the "On" time.2. Press the "OFF TIME" button and use the arrow keys to set the "off" time.3. Make sure the two orange lights (next to the ON TIME and OFF TIME buttons) are lit. Pressing these buttons toggles the orange lights. To check power or turn on immediately, advance the current time until it passes the "POWER ON TIME” setting, and then stop at the actual time. The two sockets should turn on once the current time reaches "ON TIME".
