Review on Beltronics 015007-6 STi Magnum Radar Detector: Ultimate Protection for Drivers by Frank Dubey

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Best-in-class I/O and Q/T detection. Lots of blind spots and wrong K

Comes with device, simple dual suction cup mount for clear window, quick start guide, warranty card and accompanying booklet. Came with a "new" wrapped "smartcord" cigarette lighter power cord with mute button and LED warning light (The new cord has a straight section of wire next to the RJ11 jack. It has also been finished with a nice fabric wrapped foam rubber Duffel bag supplied by Beltronics made of Foam.Bad, Magnum has finally joined Redline in the plastic case/suitcase/luggage club to aid in its ability to hide from radar detectors I don't know if you can still call it Magnum Oo, but I would like to see someone test the new plastic case of the Magnum and Redline to see if they are still immune to RDD."Magnum".Magnums are stealthy) I Segmented Magnum 2,5,8 /RDR off/TSR off/POP off LRD950 disables K-Filter / POP disables ra working firmware 1.37. Mounted high on the windshield next to the sun visors. Run K and some red light cameras and speed cameras seem to be using the K-band frequency. So I tested the K with a couple of K radar shields around me. And these 2 detectors appear to be about the same in the K range, they fire within fractions of a second of each other and it is randomly determined which one fires first, but it looks like the Magnum will alarm first more often than not. Magnum also warns of very weak K-band in some store fronts, which Uniden doesn't even warn about, which could be Unidens filters or Magnum sensitivity. Even with the K filter off, the Uniden is much quieter than the Magnum. It seems like every automatic shop door, every blind spot/lane assist car, every leaky radar yells a K on the Magnum. Remember I turned off all filters on both, I wanted to compare distance and sensitivity. The Ka 34.7 is the most used in my area and where I commute to work daily. Once again they go shoulder to shoulder on 7/34, trading blows over who will be first, but like the K-Band, Magnum will signal first more often. The only thing I will give the Magnum is the radar that comes from behind, it seems to stay longer or warn earlier. Maybe it's more sensitive to reflections from radar waves or reflections from objects in front of me. Both have a very good feel for quick triggering and instant turn on. Ka 35.5 and 33.8 seem to warn a few seconds earlier than Uniden. On 2 occasions, the Uniden didn't even respond to the quick trigger 33.8. One came from behind, traversed a short winding underpass, drove through the underpass, then the Magnum shut down for a few seconds and the Uniden is silent. I look around and look in my mirror. I see LEO approaching quickly, only slowing down a bit, but going through a red light. I'm sitting at a red light and want to turn right, LEO brakes hard on the next street and turns left (I wonder who he was chasing :D). I'm pretty sure the second was ahead in the distance because the Magnum gives a low ramp warning and the Uniden is silent, then the same frequency of 33.8 warns the Magnum and launches the Uniden. I get 1 more short high ramp warning from both and never see LEO and have no idea where he came from. The Magnum outperforms the Uniden at all ranges and is better suited to spotting rear radar shots. For city and suburban driving, the K-band is loud (this is likely to be a deal breaker for many of you). I don't know if this Magnum is just weaker, if my LRD950 is a top tier contender, or maybe it's just okay to spot a city with all the signs, traffic and obstacles. Another thing that comes to mind is that both use a packaged low noise amplifier, Uniden has a faster processor, Magnum uses an M3 antenna/horn (2 separate horns vs 1 Uniden horn) and can be segmented . I could tell a big difference in long-distance detection on the Autobahn, but haven't had a chance to try it yet.
