Natural Pink Easter Egg Color
I was looking for a natural color to make pink Easter eggs (beets always make my eggs beige) and these little bugs worked great. About 10 insects were boiled in one liter of water until the water turned pink. Then they cooled the water and dyed the hard-boiled eggs by immersing them in the dye bath for several hours. The pink was very light and clean. Also, my daughter thought it was pretty cool that we used bugs to color the eggs. If you're wondering about the safety of using it with eggs, I understand that cochineal is used as a food coloring for many shades of red or pink. as an alternative to FD&C red food coloring made from coal tar.
