Since the velcro dots were about every inch apart I couldn't find the right way to tighten the velcro dots either, so I ended up using tape to secure the collar. It's snug enough to stay in, but I can also easily slip this collar on and off when I need it. I understand how a stubborn cat or dog can take this collar off, but I've been very lucky with a cat that leaves it alone. All in all this is a great collar and I would recommend it. The small size is perfect for a cat with no paw problems. Also, my cat keeps scratching the collar with all her claws and after several weeks of wearing this collar there are still no punctures whatsoever.
