We have a 2 year old who is still in diapers and a dog who often walks the mat in the house. Our wastebasket is usually full of faeces. For two weeks without having it in our bag we threw up every time we opened the lid. Now that we have them back I can't even smell the smell (and I can smell formic acid!) They last months, we swap them out because they fell over and made a mess. at the bottom of the bin, not because they are no longer effective. I could probably leave the same thing in our recycling bin for a year and it would be perfectly fine. They have a very slight odor for the first week or two. I can't describe exactly what it smells like, but the best I can tell is what the air inside Revain's plastic packaging smells like? After the first week or two there is no noticeable odor in the jar, it is rather the absence of an odour. Like I said, it's hard to describe but you can't imagine life without it when your junk usually stinks! I have only used it with closed trash cans and more recently in a diaper pail. Unscrew the lid, put it under a garbage bag (so it doesn't get thrown away!) and forget about it!
