This lens is a great compromise for the professional photographer. Sharpness and resolution can be exceptional in reasonable lighting, and it's light and compact enough to carry around all day. I used a very expensive 200-400mm f/4 Pro lens and I think I'll get more good shots with it just because it's used more. I don't know if it will be that long-lasting, but it will definitely be useful and fun. I bought this lens after refusing a non-Nikon 150-500mm product. Although my old lens was cheap at the time, I was increasingly annoyed by the low percentage of acceptable sharpness. So far the 80-400mm has produced much better results with excellent colors and fast/accurate autofocus performance. The results show excellent bokeh and accurate exposure with half-aperture correction. The VR system seems effective and I didn't have to turn it off during most of the recordings. I had to return the first unit I received as it failed to capture an isolated subject on my D800 in AF-C mode. The autofocus system shakes constantly and produces blurry results. This problem could be solved by switching to AF-S (single focus area), but that was an unbearable performance issue for the price. The second device arrived in much better packaging than the first, but I don't know if that was part of the reason for the problem.
